I am so excited to share the news that Great Expectations Doulas has been voted BEST DOULA by DFW Child magazine. This is my 4th year in a row to win this award. What can I say? It’s been fun and sometimes hard – but always, I am both proud and humbled to serve expecting families in the Dallas, Fort Worth and Denton area.
As much of an honor it is to win this award, it really is not about me or Great Expectations. It is about the families that invite us into their homes and birthing space. Our goal is to serve expecting families so that they can have happy BIRTH days. I love our tag line because that really is what it is all about. A happy birth day can mean lots of different things to different people and Great Expectations wants to find out what it means to *you* and help you achieve it. We want to provide relational support and we want to make it easier for you to prepare to meet your baby so that no matter what happens, you will feel like we had your back. We want to watch as your family grows both in size and in love and we want to help along that way.
When I decided to add doulas to my solo doula practice, I was honestly not sure how it would go. I spent some time looking around at the doulas who were active in my various doula professional organizations (yes, these groups exist!) and I picked the ones that I enjoyed listening to, that made me laugh and that demonstrated a high level of love and professionalism for the families they worked with, even when they were not with their clients. I asked those ladies if they wanted to join me on an adventure to see if we could do even more for DFW families. Those doulas that said yes to my offer…well, I think we are all very happy they did. I know I sure am!
Our team now offers services all over Dallas, Fort Worth, Denton and all those towns in between. We attended births at 28 locations last year (yes, there was a lot of driving involved at times!) and had the pleasure of helping over a hundred families. We now offer a full range of services like childbirth education, labor and post partum doulas, belly binding and placenta encapsulation. Team work truly does make the dream work!
I want to give a huge “thank you” to each of our clients who took the time to vote for us and thank you to my team of doulas at Great Expectations. I’ve been a doula in the DFW area for almost a decade and I’ve always known that my clients were some of the coolest people in the metroplex, but now I can sincerely say that my clients *and* my team rock my world!

Best Doula Winner for North Texas: Great Expectations Doulas/Maria Pokluda
After years of working with moms-to-be on her own, Maria Pokluda expanded her practice to serve the Dallas-Fort Worth area with four labor and two postpartum doulas. Pokluda’s wide range of birth specializations — including hospital, home, VBACs, and multiples — have gained praise from clients for nearly a decade and allowed her to win this award for four consecutive years. In addition to working with moms all over the area, Pokluda trains doulas internationally.
