Becoming a new parent can be one of the happiest times in your life, but it can also be one of the hardest. Here are a 13 tips to make your post partum happy and healthy.
Be gentle with yourself.
Hire a post partum doula for your family. (We have amazing post partum doulas at Great Expectations and would love to help your new family!)
For those first few days of your baby’s life, use a high quality oil such as olive or coconut on your baby’s bottom. The meconium will come right off your baby’s bottom and make diaper changes easier for you and your baby.
If you have used an herbal bath, save some of the herbal water to mix with witch hazel. This mixture can then be poured over menstrual pads and placed in the freezer. These “padsicles” will feel lovely in the days following your birth.
Choose wisely who comes to visit and put those that do come to work. You might consider having a running list of small chores that a visitor can do while they are in your home. These chores might include folding laundry, bringing groceries or a meal, making sure you have a large glass of water next to you when they leave or even holding the baby so you can shower.
Trust your partner with your baby. You will need time to do things for self care.
If you have had an uncomplicated vaginal birth, you can probably start exercising when you feel ready. Start with gentle activity and let your body guide you for the first few weeks. If you had a Cesarean birth or other complications, discuss your exercise options with your care provider. (However it is likely you will also be able to do light exercises soon as well.)
Get outside. Take baby for a walk, check the mail etc. You need Vitamin D and seeing the sun improves mood. Babies usually love it too.
Know where to go to get the help you need. When it comes to needing help with nursing, feeling blue or post partum health issues the easier it is to reach out the better. Have the number of your doula, placenta encapsulator, a great IBCLC and a post partum counselor in your phone.
Consider belly binding as a way to celebrate the end of your pregnancy.
Babies love skin to skin with moms and dads. Everyone should hold baby!
Sleep is important. Make a plan and discuss it with your partner so that you are able to get the sleep you need.
If someone tells you that they are concerned that you may be experiencing a post partum mood disorder – believe them and let them help you get help.
